Why do I believe Instagram is the “social media of the future”?

Thank to the massive sale and distribution of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices the world is more connected than a decade ago. According to Alexa, besides Google, the most visited websites during 2018 are social media: Youtube, Facebook and Instagram.

The latter has not only grown really fast in the last eight years, reaching this year more than 100 million active users a month in the United States, but also has changed the way we perceive others and how others perceive us through photographs, videos and Instagram stories.

Since the beginning social media has been a small window to share all kinds of info, especially related to ourselves, and nowadays is the easiest and most efficient way for brands to create a community that actually cares and wants to be engaged with their products or services.

Instagram was launched in 2010, not only their numbers had been huge since then, but also it has been a platform that supports and has helped hundreds of influencers to rise into fame, including big social movements and entrepreneurs with start ups.

Pros
  • Instagram offers a pure visual engage with users, giving them the opportunity of having a close look of brand’s products.
  • Instagram stories are great to communicate ‘face to face’ with the followers and obtain feedback or interaction through activities such as surveys or challenges.
Cons
  • Branded content on apps and social media websites are starting to have stricter rules to share branded content, that are making post less visible on users timelines.
  • People are having privacy concerns and are worried their data is being sold or used in a negative way.

Solutions
  • Good content is key to gain more followers and have a high number of interactions. Choosing our publications carefully and taking note on what our audience likes or dislikes is important to make us relevant.
  • The average person uses social media around 135 minutes per day. If we want them to look at our content frequently is also important to be constant and publish habitually. You won’t have a strong community if you publish one or twice a month!
  • Being aware of the changes of Instagram’s algorithm and keeping an eye on the management of the user data to avoid misunderstandings.
I think Instagram is the “social media of the future” because is a place where you can find a little bit of everything: museums, pets and even presidents. It also offers lots of opportunities to create innovative visual content that has approached users and brand even closer by featuring different ways to interact (comments, likes and DMs) so they can learn about each other.
